We all know on some level that over the long haul, what we do in education has the greatest relevance to building the kind of society we want. It is the path to individual fulfillment, and our aim is to make that path broad enough to for all to travel. To give every child a chance to develop to the limit of his or her ability — it is still one of the most radical ideas in human history. And yet, it has grown quite naturally out of American cultural expression. Ultimately, education serves all of our purposes: liberty, justice, freedom, but none more than equality, and especially equality of opportunity.

It is for this reason that I urge residents of Oak Harbor to vote “yes” on the March 8, Maintenance and Operation Levy. This levy helps us, in areas of education, to continue to offer opportunities to children that are on a par with other school districts.

A “yes” vote will continue to provide textbooks and classroom supplies; extra instructional time for kindergarten through 5th grade teachers, additional teachers, advanced placement classes at the high school, technology in the form of computers and networking; and a hot lunch program.

These opportunities can take the form of tools in the hands of capable educators, who can use them to provide motivational direction, confidence and hope for all of our students today.
