District 11 Little League tournament action began this weekend, and the combined Central and South Whidbey 9/10 softball team won two games and is close to locking up a trip to the state tournament.
Central/South Whidbey defeated North Whidbey 22-5 Saturday, June 28, and Sedro-Woolley 12-2 Sunday in South Whidbey.
Both games went only four innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.
The Central/South Whidbey 11/12 softball team split two games in Oak Harbor Sunday, June 29.
The Central Whidbey 9/10 baseball team rallied from five runs down to take the lead but couldn’t hold on in a 10-9 loss to North Whidbey at Sedro-Woolley Sunday.
The Central Whidbey 11/12 baseball team eked out a 2-1 win over Sedro-Woolley Sunday in South Whidbey.
9/10 Softball
Central/South Whidbey will face the winner of Anacortes and South Skagit, the two survivors in the losers’ bracket, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 1. If Central/South Whidbey loses that game, it will get another shot at 6 p.m. Thursday to wrap up the district title.
In CW/SW’s win over North Whidbey in the opener, Kaia Richmond, Coral Caveness and Chelsea Prescott each reached base five times and scored five runs.
Prescott also earned the pitching win.
In Sunday’s action against Sedro-Woolley, Prescott paced Central/South Whidbey by snaring another pitching win and sparking the offense with a grand slam in the second inning.
Mollie Bailey drove in two runs and scored another.
11/12 Softball
Withstanding a late rally, the Central/South Whidbey Little League 11/12 softball team tipped North Whidbey 11-9 in a loser-out game Sunday.
Central/South Whidbey will need to defeat Anacortes at 6 p.m. Monday, June 30, to earn another shot at Skagit in the championship series.
Skagit defeated Central/South Whidbey 8-2 in the opener and then ripped Anacortes 12-1.
In Central/South Whidbey’s win over North Whidbey, a double by Kayla Knauer highlighted a four-run first inning that erased a 2-0 NWLL lead.
Central/South Whidbey used four walks, one to Coupeville’s Maya Toomey-Stout, to add three runs in the second.
Singles by Arianna Marshall and Megan Reeves led to two runs in the third.
Two walks with two outs in the third came around to score the final runs for Central/South Whidbey in fifth.
Toomey-Stout finished with three walks and three runs.
Coupeville’s Hannah Davidson reached base three times to aid the offense.
North Whidbey out-hit Central/South Whidbey 13-3 but gave up 10 walks to Central/South Whidbey’s four.
In its loss to Skagit, Central/South Whidbey surrendered five runs in the first inning, including a home run to Avery Wyair, and couldn’t recover.
Skagit pitcher Wyair stuck out 16 in the win and walked five. Toomey-Stout and Davidson each had one of the walks.
Central/South Whidbey scored both its runs in the fifth. Reeves walked and Melody Wilkie was hit by a pitch. The pair eventually scored on a ground out and error.
11/12 Baseball
Central Whidbey, which had a bye in the first round, meets Burlington in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 1.
Burlington rolled to 12-0 and 17-0 wins over South Whidbey and Anacortes in its opening games.
Noah Meffert and Ulrik Wells scored for Central Whidbey in its squeaker over Sedro-Woolley, and Meffert and David Prescott provided stellar defensive plays.
Reliever Matt Hilborn closed out the game to preserve the win.
9/10 Baseball
North Whidbey bolted to a 5-0 first-inning lead.
Central Whidbey made up the ground by the third inning, knotting the score at 6, then took the lead with two runs in the fourth.
North Whidbey regained the lead, 9-8, then Central Whidbey came back once more, evening the game in the fifth inning.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, NW’s Colton Byars slugged a triple, scoring Jackson Biggs with the eventual winning run.
Central Whidbey threatened in the sixth, getting two on with no outs, but couldn’t plate the equalizer.
Central Whidbey, which had a bye in the first round, drops into the consolation bracket and faces Anacortes at 6 p.m. Monday, June 30, in a loser-out game.
