Oak Harbor resident George Churchill, a well-known and longtime businessman in the community, was seriously injured in a one-car accident Sunday afternoon.

Churchill, 69, was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He remained in serious condition in the intensive care unit Tuesday.

Churchill was driving north in a 2005 Honda Accord on Crosby Road when he crossed the centerline. He overcorrected and the car began sliding broadside, striking a couple of trees before coming to a rest, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Trooper J. Greene said Churchill was not wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected.

Greene said speed appeared to be the cause of the accident. He said drugs and alcohol are not considered a factor in the crash.

Churchill and his family have a long history in the Oak Harbor community. He is married to Island County Superior Court Judge Vickie Churchill.
