A 28-year-old Oak Harbor man is in jail for kicking open his ex-girlfriend’s door early in the morning on Aug. 10.

Renante Delfinado pleaded guilty in Island County Superior Court Nov. 3 to malicious mischief in the third degree with domestic violence and criminal trespassing in the first degree.

Delfinado was originally charged with a felony, residential burglary, but pleaded to the misdemeanors as part of a plea bargain.

Judge Vickie Churchill went along with the recommendation from the defense and prosecution in sentencing Delfinado to 365 days in jail with 351 days suspended.

That means Delfinado will spend 14 days in jail as long as he complies with the conditions set by the court. He also has to pay $1,200 in fines and fees.

According to the police report, Delfinado was trying to contact his ex-girlfriend, but she didn’t want to see him. He called her and went to her SE Eighth Avenue apartment three times that night.

On the fourth time, Delfinado stopped by her apartment at about 3:30 in the morning. He listened through the door and heard the sound of people having sex.

Delfinado told the police that he felt angry and hurt, so he knocked quickly. When he didn’t get an answer, he kicked down the door, breaking the door jam. He yelled at his ex-girlfriend and the man she was with until they finally left.

Later, the woman told the police that Delfinado is a good man, but he’s having a tough time with their breakup.
