After dropping a tie-breaker “game” to Chimacum Tuesday, the Coupeville High School football team will close out the season with a non-league game at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at Vashon Island.

Chimacum defeated the Wolves 20-8 at Sequim to earn the third and final Olympic League berth in the district playoffs. The Cowboys and Coupeville, who split their two games this fall, tied for third in conference play, setting up the half-game tie-breaker.

Since Coupeville (1-8) did not qualify for district, it was paired up with Vashon Island (3-6), another squad left out of the postseason.

Chimacum and Coupeville failed to score in the first quarter of the tie-breaker. The Cowboys did threaten once but missed a field goal.

Chimacum finally broke through with a TD three minutes into the second quarter.

The Wolves responded by marching inside the Cowboy 15-yard line but turned the ball over on downs.

The Cowboys then put the game away with two scores within two minutes, the first coming with 3:21 remaining.

Coupeville avoided the shutout when Gabe Eck bulled in with four seconds left.

“We couldn’t put a drive together on offense and stalled out multiple times,” Coupeville coach Brett Smedley said. “When we finally put one together it was too late.”

The Wolves played well on defense most of the night, Smedley said, but “Chimacum was able to make a few big plays offensively.”

“I have to give credit to Chimacum,” he said. “They are a much improved team over years past, and I wish them good luck against Cascade Christian this weekend.”

The Wolves struggled on offense but produced several highlights on defense and special teams. Coupeville caused and recovered a fumble, recovered an onside kick and blocked at PAT kick.

Smedley isn’t concerned about a letdown heading into the Vashon Island game: “Our guys will be ready to come out focused and with determination to go out on the right foot.”
