The Oak Harbor police need help finding a man who damaged an ATM with a can of pop.

Sgt. Jerry Baker said he’s hoping someone will recognize the photograph of the suspect taken by the cash-delivery machine and report it to the police at 279-4600.

According to Baker, the suspect drove to the ATM at Navy Federal Credit Union on Cabot Drive at 2:11 a.m., May 28. He got out of a white, newer-model Ford Ranger pickup, which the ATM also photographed, and threw a can of soda at the machine.

The soda dripped down into the machine and caused $2,000 worth of damage to the internal computer parts.

After throwing the can, the suspect walked up to the ATM, allowing it to photograph him with a smile. The machine takes photos every few seconds, Baker said.

“He thought it was funny,” Baker said. “You can see him laughing.”

The suspect may be a member of the Navy. Baker said he has a short, military-style haircut. He’s in his late teens or early 20s and wears glasses. On the night of the vandalism, he was wearing a distinctive beaded necklace.

If caught, the suspect would face a felony malicious mischief charge.

Baker said he posted flyers with the man’s image with law enforcement over the last few weeks, but hasn’t gotten any leads yet.

“I would hate to see him get away with this,” Baker said.
