A 32-year-old man from Port Orchard is accused of choking his pregnant girlfriend until she became unconscious in her Oak Harbor home while four children were present, court documents allege.

Prosecutors charged Joshua Graham in Island County Superior Court Oct. 17 with assault in the second degree and assault in the fourth degree. Both were charged as domestic-violence related crimes.

Oak Harbor police found out about the alleged assault after a retired police officer in Florida called the dispatch center Sept. 18 because he learned that the 31-year-old woman had been assaulted by her boyfriend.

Officer Manuel Silveira went to the woman’s house to investigate. The alleged victim said she and Graham had gotten into a fight in her bedroom while four children — her two kids and his two kids — were in the home. All the children were under 10 years old.

The woman claimed Graham threw her on the bed and squeezed her throat. When she tried to get away, he again grabbed her by the throat and hair. She said he squeezed her throat hard enough that she couldn’t breathe and blacked out, Silveira’s report states.

After she regained consciousness, she grabbed the phone to call for help. Graham pleaded with her not to call police and left the residence, leaving his two children behind, the report states.

The woman went to the hospital because she was 17-weeks pregnant and was worried about the health of the unborn baby.

She was “cleared” by the hospital and returned home, court documents indicate.

The alleged victim told the officer that the incident was the third time Graham had assaulted her since they started dating.

A retired police officer living in Jacksonville called the Oak Harbor Police to report the alleged assault after learning about the allegations on a Facebook page, the report states.

If convicted of the charges, Graham would face from one year and one month to one year and five months in prison under the standard sentencing range.
