Speeding up to a cop car and flashing high beams at night didn’t work out well for a driver on South Whidbey April 15, according to court documents.
The driver, 36-year-old Granite Falls resident Tyler Sheary, allegedly refused to pull over when a deputy attempted a traffic stop, but police later caught up to him at a gas station, according to reports by deputies with the Island County Sheriff’s Office.
Prosecutors charged Sheary in Island County Superior Court April 17 with attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle.
A deputy wrote in his report that he was driving on Highway 525 near Bayview Road when he noticed in his rearview mirror that a car was approaching at a high rate of speed and flashing its high beams. As the deputy drove past Thompson Road, the car turned off its headlights altogether.
The deputy pulled over, got behind the white Subaru and turned on his emergency lights to pull the car over. The driver at first signaled that he was going to pull over, but then picked up speed, the report states.
The deputy chased the car, with lights and sirens on, as it went about 80 mph in a 45 mph zone, the report indicates. The deputy stopped pursuing near Honeymoon Road for safety reasons. The deputy asked other law enforcement to be on the lookout for the car.
Later, another deputy saw a car matching the description speeding on Highway 20 near the intersection with Monroe Landing Road. The deputy did a U-turn and drove into Oak Harbor, where he saw a white Subaru stopped at a gas station.
The deputy contacted the driver, who was identified as Sheary, and arrested him.
