An Oak Harbor man is in the ICU at Harborview Medical Center following a fiery car crash involving three vehicles on North Whidbey Sunday evening.

Chad Gravitt, 48, was driving south on Highway 20 in a Toyota Venza when he crossed the centerline near Monroe Landing Road just before 7 p.m. May 14. Gravitt crashed his vehicle head-on into a northbound Nissan Titan, then struck a northbound Toyota RAV4. All three vehicles came to a rest on the right shoulder, with one vehicle in flames, according to North Whidbey Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Steve Lacy.

Lacy said North Whidbey Fire units arrived on scene within six minutes and extinguished the car, which had already been vacated and was completely involved in the fire.

Gravitt was airlifted from the scene to Harborview Medical Center with serious injuries. A hospital representative reported that as of Monday morning, he was still in serious condition.

The driver of the Nissan, 18-year-old Lincoln Mattila of Lake Stevens, and a 15-year-old passenger in his vehicle were both injured and treated at the scene. The two other passengers in the Nissan, a 17-year-old and a 13-year-old, were not injured.

The driver of the Toyota RAV4, 57-year-old Christina Nguyen, and her passenger, 63-year-old Thai Nguyen, both of New Iberia, Louisiana, were not injured.

All three vehicles were totaled.

Washington State Patrol is investigating the incident and reported that drugs or alcohol were involved. The memo indicates that charges are pending against Gravitt.
