A 33-year-old Freeland man accused of trying to collect money from an acquaintance in a rather unfriendly way is now facing prison time if convicted.

Roger Carr was charged with residential burglary in Island County Superior Court Oct. 31. He pleaded not guilty Nov. 9.

According to a report written by Island County Deputy Jay Wallace, a resident of Humphrey Road on South Whidbey reported that Carr and two other men came to his house Oct. 27 to collect the $50 a week payment he owes Carr. The resident said he hid from the men and didn’t answer the door, but they kicked the door open and went into the house to get him.

Wallace wrote that Carr forced the man to get into the car with them and they drove around for about an hour. Carr was wearing a heavy chain around his hand and allegedly threatened to beat the man to death with it.

The resident said Carr eventually let him out of the car and he went to borrow the money from his family. The alleged victim said he found his home had been burglarized and power tools stolen when he returned home.

According to Wallace, he recovered some of the power tools when he later arrested the men.

If convicted, Carr could face between three years and seven months and four years and nine months in the state penitentiary. Carr is being held in the Island County jail on $10,000 bail.
