A 55-year-old Freeland man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday after being pulled over on Bush Point Road for driving erratically.

A Washington State Patrol trooper heard a single gunshot as he approached the 1997 Lincoln coupe after making the stop near Dolphin Drive, State Patrol Det. Scott Witman said. The weapon was a Colt 45 handgun.

The man was identified as Carl Stephen Henson. He had lived in the area for more than 30 years, said Island County Coroner Robert Bishop. He apparently lives alone.

An Island County Fire District 3 vehicle was on the scene, and firefighters administered aid, but Henson was declared dead at 3:51 p.m., Bishop said.

The body was released to Visser Funeral Home in Langley. A celebration of life will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at American Legion Post No. 141 in Langley.
