Marina puts two boats on auction block

Wanna buy a boat or two?

The Oak Harbor Marina will be auctioning off two boats that had been left in moorage for years while the owners refused to pay moorage fees.

Last Tuesday, the Oak Harbor City Council passed a resolution authorizing the sale of the boats in order to recoup marina charges. Harbormaster Mack Funk said it was an exhaustive legal process to get to the point of selling off the boats.

The auction will probably be in January or February, Funk said.

The owner of one of the boats, Jerry Peters of Sedro-Woolley, is delinquent in moorage payments in the amount of $1,368. The owner of the other boat, Shane Cowan of Mount Vernon, owes $1,189.

The city probably won’t recoup all the lost revenues.

“One boat is worthless, but we have to go through this process,” Funk said. He added that the other boat will probably sell for the amount owed.

After the auction, the city will keep the amount owed and return anything left over — minus the cost of the auction — to the boat owner.
