Market opens in new location

More parking and more space available

Amid a dandelion and grass field next to the Coupeville Library, something new is sprouting up each Saturday morning.

Coupeville Farmers Market opened April 2, at a new location in a large field known as the OSPEC property.

After two weeks of sales, farmers seem happy with the new location because it provides better parking and more space than the previous location on North Main Street, next to the County Deli.

“We had a lot of happy customers,” market manager Peg Tennant said of the April 9 market success.

Tennant said she is pleased with the new location and the early attendance. Five farmers were selling produce Saturday along with the usual gaggle of arts, craft and food stands.

Tenant said more farmers will start selling at the market in coming weeks as fresh produce becomes available. She said community information booths will also have spots at the weekly market.

Several factors caused market officials to switch locations. North Main Street from Third Street to Front is scheduled for replacement. North Main Street will close during the construction period that will take most of the summer to complete.

The field also provides more space so the market can expand. Tennant said customers appreciate the extra parking an adjacent lot offers.

“That’s the number one plus,” Tennant said.

The Farmers Market leased the land from the Town of Coupeville on a one-year trial basis. Market officials will evaluate the location after the season ends. The market takes place every Saturday except for Aug. 13, when the Coupeville Arts and Crafts Festival takes place.

Tennant said vendors are looking for ways to better utilize the space but don’t have anything specific lined up yet.

“At this point we’re still feeling it out,” Tennant said. She also wants to work closely with organizers of upcoming festivals. That would ensure the market capitalizes on the people that come into town during the festivals.

The Coupeville Farmers Market takes place each Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Oct. 8. The Oak Harbor Public Market begins June 2.
