For the most part, Friday was a good day for the Coupeville High School track team at the state finals in Cheney.
Dalton Martin finished fifth in the discus after entering the event seeded seventh. His toss of 147 feet topped his previous best by nearly eight feet.
Skyler Lawrence placed 16th in the girls shot put with a throw of 28-02.5.
Makana Stone, who placed second in the 400 at last year’s meet, will return to the finals after finishing second in her heat with the fourth-best overall time of 58.95. The finals in the 400 will be at 1:15 p.m. Saturday.
The girls relay teams had mixed results.
The 4×200 team of Stone, Lauren Grove, Sylvia Hurlburt and Marisa Etzell finished third in its heat with the third-best overall time of 1:47.29.
The same four were disqualified in the 4×100 preliminaries for an exchange violation.
The 4×200 finals are Saturday at 10:20 a.m.
