“Nothing stirs the patriotic juices more than music, so several area performers plan to pay tribute to Veterans Day by singing out for cause and country.Headlined by local barbershop chorus The An-O-Chords, the special Veterans Day musical concert will be held Saturday, Nov. 11 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Skywarrior Theater on the grounds of the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. Also at the top of the bill are the First Methodist Church choir, the Oak Harbor High School choir, the National Junior ROTC drill team, the High Point Quartet and a women’s close harmony group the Harmonaires.Tony Steadman, a member of the An-O-Chords, said the concert will feature patriotic music from many eras and will be a fundraiser for the World War II Memorial Fund and for a new veterans’ memorial at Maple Leaf Cemetery. Tickets will be available only at the door for $5.Steadman said that following last Veterans Day, he heard many people say they were surprised that Oak Harbor, for a military town, held no big event to honor and celebrate veterans of the past and present. Such comments, he said, led directly to the organization of this year’s concert.This is something we could do that would make a point, said Steadman.In addition to the voluntary participation of the performers, the program is also supported by Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation, Alaska USA Federal Credit Union and Navy Federal Credit Union. The concert will include a medley of military service songs which includes words from the poem Sound of Freedom written by Steadman.The performance is open to everyone. Guards at the base gate will be able to direct non-military visitors to the theater. The Skywarrior Theater accommodates 600 people.———-New monumentA new monument honoring the veterans of Island County will be unveiled during Veterans Day services on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at Oak Harbor’s Maple Leaf Cemetery.The monument was the dream of local residents Henry and Lorene Ottesen who raised enough in donations to pay for the project. Lorene died in July prior to the monument’s completion but enough money had been raised to see the project through.The ceremony will include color guards, the Oak Harbor Community Band, the Washington State Police Officers and Sheriff’s Department Association and a military veteran quartet. Retired Navy chaplin Fred Renfroe will deliver an invocation. Featured speaker will be retired Cmdr. Harry H. Ferrier, who served in the Battle of Midway during World War II as well as during the Korean conflict and in Vietnam. “
