‘Miss Hollywood’ and all that RazzL

It’s a little unusual to see members of a fitness class bypass their gym’s rack of dumbbells and reach instead for top hats and canes. But when you find out their instructor’s nickname is “Miss Hollywood,” it starts to make a little more sense.

It’s a little unusual to see members of a fitness class bypass their gym’s rack of dumbbells and reach instead for top hats and canes. But when you find out their instructor’s nickname is “Miss Hollywood,” it starts to make a little more sense.

Carol Sele, the founder of Unsize Me Fitness and Wellness, grew up tap dancing, swing dancing and Latin dancing with her relatives. While living in Los Angeles, she was dazzled by the bright lights, stage and screen and was mesmerized by the glamour of early Hollywood films. Her love for the theater was passed on to her children who are big show tune and musical fans, and now that same theatrical love has started to grow at an Oak Harbor gym.

Sele introduced Razzl classes at the Thrive Community Fitness center in January and said their popularity has been steadily growing since. Razzl classes incorporate moves from dance history classics like the Charleston and jitterbug.

“I just had this dream to incorporate art into fitness,” Sele said. “Rather than trying to mimic someone, let the movement come from within.”

Sele stressed that the classes aren’t based on trying to perfect anything. People of all shapes and sizes are cherished and welcomed in Razzl. There’s no such thing as doing something wrong.

It’s promoting a celebration of every individual’s body and ability, Sele said.

The classes center on interval training and the three Rs — replicate, repeat, remember. Sele teaches in a slow, quick, quick, slow pattern and orders her songs in such a manner. She said when her students know the order, they’re encouraged to push themselves and get their heart rates up on the second fast song because they know active recovery is just around the corner.

RazzL classes are held four times a week at the gym; an additional class was just added on Wednesday mornings. Sele will present the class at a world fitness conference next summer and said Oak Harbor instructors have brought the program to Florida and Northern California.

“Who says a small town like Oak Harbor can’t be a national trendsetter?” Sele said.

“I want people to feel like stars when they come here,” Sele said. “…We’re gonna burn it.”
