Evergreen park residents and their supporters are organizing opposition to an application to change a Goldie Road property designation to allow for development of the mobile home park and surrounding properties into retail stores or restaurants.

The push to organize came after the Oak Harbor planning commission’s 3-2 vote to recommend approve of the land-use designation change to Oak Harbor City Council. The council will hold a public hearing on the issue Dec. 2 at City Hall.

Commissioners Keith Fakkema, Kristi Jensen and Greg Wasinger voted for approval; Julie Dale and Nancy Fey voted against the change.

A second vote recommended approval of the 2008 Comprehensive Plan Updates as a whole, including land-use designation changes for 164 Ernst Dr., 33170 Highway 20 and the Goldie Road properties.

Dale cast the only descending vote.

Public testimony will be taken at the Dec. 2 City Council meeting at 7 p.m., City Hall, 865 SE Barrington Dr.

The city council will not decide on the issue at the Dec. 2 meeting. The last council meeting of the year, on Dec. 16, is the first available time for the council to vote on the issue, Steve Powers, development services director, said.

However, he said the process may stretch into January.
