A Coupeville man was killed and his wife seriously injured in a motorcycle accident on Central Whidbey Sunday.

The Washington State Patrol is reporting that 68-year-old Gale W Tappe died at the scene and his wife, 55-year-old Joan M Tappe, was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The accident occurred at about 11 a.m. on Highway 525 near milepost 30 and involved a second vehicle driven by Gregory Hallett, 62, of Langley.

According to a state patrol account of the accident, Hallett was heading north on the state route in a 1996 Ford F250 pickup truck and had stopped to make a left turn. The Tappes, driving south on a 2006 BMW R120RT motorcycle, were following behind another vehicle and near the fog line.

Hallett made the left turn after the first vehicle passed and struck the motorcycle. He was not injured.

The state patrol has cited the cause of the collision as inattention. Drugs or alcohol are not believed to have been factors in the crash.
