The Coupeville High School volleyball team put up a fight before falling 3-1 at Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday, Sept. 15.
After dropping the first game 25-10, the Wolves responded with a 28-26 win in the second set. The Hurricanes pulled out the win by taking the next two games 25-20, 25-18.
“They battled,” Coupeville coach Breanne Smedley said about her club.
“I’m really proud of the progress that they’re making on the court. The girls are playing together, taking care of their jobs and doing a better job of siding-out without letting strings of points go by.”
Smedley said she was “most impressed” with the aggressiveness of her athletes.
“We were swinging on game point rather than tipping or setting the ball over,” she said. “We are working on this in practice and it is showing on the court.”
Payton Aparicio “had a great all-around match,” according to Smedley. She tallied five kills (with only one error) on a .500 hitting average, a block, four digs and a 2.09 passing average (out of three). She also was a perfect 10-for-10 serving.
Katrina McGranahan posted four kills, a block and four aces; Emma Smith had four kills, a block and a block assist; Lauren Rose hit all 13 of her serves; Tiffany Briscoe added five kills; and Valen Trujillo finished with 10 digs, a 2.19 passing average and three aces.
The Coupeville junior varsity team won 3-0.
The Wolves (0-3) host Orcas Island (0-0) at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25.
