Special agents with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service teamed with detectives from the Oak Harbor Police Department for a Craigslist drug bust in October.

Matthew Czarnik, 51, of Oak Harbor man, was caught in the online sting operation, according to court documents. He was charged in Island County Superior Court Dec. 2 with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute.

The case started after a special agent at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station posted an advertisement on Craigslist.

The agent posed as a young woman who was looking for “a new friend who can bring along Tina,” according to the report by Detective Carl Seim with the Oak Harbor police.

“Tina” is a slang term for methamphetamine, Seim wrote.

Czarnik allegedly replied to the post by email, stating that he has “lots of tina.” He sent the agent photos of himself and an image of male genitals, the report states.

The agent emailed a photo of a woman’s cleavage and set up a time to meet.

NCIS contacted Oak Harbor police because Czarnik is a civilian.

A special agent agreed to meet with Czarnik at the gazebo in Windjammer Park.

Two Oak Harbor detectives and another special agent watched from a hidden spot and swooped in to arrest Czarnik after the agent gave the signal that he showed her the meth, the report states.

The officers recovered suspected meth from Czarnik’s pocket and in his vehicle, Seim wrote.

If convicted of the charge, Czarnik could face up to a year and eight months in prison under the standard sentencing range.
