Two Oak Harbor schools were locked down over the noon hour Wednesday after a woman in a nearby home reported being assaulted by a knife-wielding stranger.

Sgt. John Dyer with the Oak Harbor Police said the 25-minute lockdown of Oak Harbor High School and Hillcrest Elementary was just a precaution and police had no reason to think the assailant would go to the schools.

Dyer said a NW Lanyard Loop resident reported being assaulted outside her home at about 11:45 a.m.

The woman said she heard some noises in her backyard and went outside to investigate. She claimed an unknown man knocked her down from behind. She struggled with the assailant and was able to get safely back into her house. The suspect left on foot.

The victim said the man was armed with a knife. The woman sustained abrasive injuries on her face and knees.

Dyer said the woman wasn’t able to give a detailed description of the attacker since he pushed her from behind. She described him as male, over 5-foot-10-inches, with olive-colored skin, dark hair and wearing blue jeans.

Dyer said the police immediately searched the area but couldn’t find anyone matching the description. He added that the police haven’t received any reports of similar attacks.

“At this point, we have no leads,” he said.
