Nelson named student representative to Oak Harbor School Board

In keeping with a tradition, an early-year change was made to the Oak Harbor School Board. The elected board appointed Oak Harbor High School junior Jacob Nelson as student representative. He takes over for Morgan Young. Nelson was one of four students who applied for the position. In addition to Nelson, Ysabella Sampson, Aaron Lintz and Isaiah Rennes were also considered for the position. The student board representatives attend each school board meeting and give elected officials updates about the goings-on in the local schools.

In keeping with a tradition, an early-year change was made to the Oak Harbor School Board.

The elected board appointed Oak Harbor High School junior Jacob Nelson as student representative. He takes over for Morgan Young.

Nelson was one of four students who applied for the position. In addition to Nelson, Ysabella Sampson, Aaron Lintz and Isaiah Rennes were also considered for the position. The student board representatives attend each school board meeting and give elected officials updates about the goings-on in the local schools.

The four candidates were interviewed during Monday’s Oak Harbor School Board meeting. School board members questioned the students about their accomplishments, the strengths and weaknesses of the school district, and what they would do to improve the schools.

Nelson said his greatest accomplishment was to become commander of the rifle team in the high school’s NJROTC program.

He said during the interview that Oak Harbor High School had great teachers, but the school district could do a better job promoting student clubs, especially the smaller ones.

In addition to his participation in NJROTC, he is an intern at Living Word Fellowship. He was the debate club president in the 2011-2012 school year. He has been a Link Crew leader since the start of the school year.

Once he graduates from high school he hopes to enter one of the service academies and enter a career in the military.

He will be sworn in during the school board’s Feb. 19 meeting.
