New habitats are under construction

Habitat for Humanity is building its fifth house on Whidbey Island for a qualified purchaser.

The property is in Admirals Cove, and the estimated completion date is July, 2002.

Island Construction donated all clearing and grading of the site, and Fakkema and Kingma donated surveying.

Volunteers of all skill levels are needed to complete construction of the house; electrical and plumbing contractors are most in demand. To volunteer, call Jim Smith, at 675-3619 or e-mail

On South Whidbey, work on a two-bedroom house on Bayview Road will begin in the spring. Applications for the home are being accepted until the end of February. To request an application, leave a message at (360) 331-6272. The application process is island wide, so persons from the north end may apply to live in the Bayview house.

To qualify for a Habitat home persons must fall within the financial guidelines. Habitat homes are sold to families with a no-interest reduced mortgage, and applicants must have a housing need, defined as either inadequate housing or as paying 50 percent of their income in rent. Families are required to put 500 to 550 hours of “sweat equity” in their home .

Habitat For Humanity’s next meeting will be Monday, Feb. 4, at St. Mary’s Church in Coupeville at 7 p.m. Anyone interested is welcome to attend.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that enlists volunteers to build low cost homes for purchase by low-income families that can afford to pay a small mortgage payment and are willing to help the organization.
