Oak Harbor’s night sky will light up with a short but potent display of fireworks on New Year’s Eve.
The show is scheduled to start at 9 p.m. and will last about 12 minutes, according to Christine Cribb, executive director of the Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce, which is sponsoring the show.
Proceeds from a golf tournament in August raised enough money to pay for the fireworks, Cribb said.
Although the show will be 10 minutes shorter than the Fourth of July fireworks, the use of larger rockets will make it more explosive.
“These fireworks will go 100 feet higher and 100 feet wider than the Fourth of July fireworks,” Cribb said.
In her continued efforts to draw more off-island visitors to the city during the non-peak season, Cribb also is looking at bringing a temporary ice rink to Oak Harbor for outdoor skating next December.
She will be working on fundraising efforts to make that happen. The rink, which would use artificial ice, allows for 100 skaters at one time. She envisions it at Windjammer Park.
“How cool would that be?” she said.
