the wild clam

Join Beach Watcher Eugene Thrasher this summer to learn the correct way to dig clams. This year he will be leading groups on two beaches, Double Bluff and West Penn Cove. The schedule of dates and times for each of the beaches are:

Saturday, July 19, at 10:30 a.m. at Penn Cove; July 31 at 9 a.m. at Double Bluff; Aug. 2 at 10 a.m. at Penn Cove; and Aug. 16 at 9 a.m. at Double Bluff.

Double Bluff Beach is south of Freeland and reached from the highway by Double Bluff Road. West Penn Cove is at Zylstra Road and Highway 20. Parking at Zylstra requires a parking permit bought at the park.

Each session will cover how to take the right size clams and replace tiny ones so they’ll continue to grow. It will also include clamming rules, guidelines, techniques and limits, plus preparation and cooking tips. Come with a clamming license, sold at most hardware stores. Wear clothing and footwear that can get wet and sandy, and bring a shoveling tool and one bucket per digger. Trenching shovels work best. Call 679-7371.

I Corps Band plays Coupeville

Concerts on the Cove has reduced the number of concerts in the Coupeville Town Park to two this summer.

“There are so many events on Whidbey Island these days, that we’ve reduced the total number of Concerts in the Park to its two most popular. A band on Sunday, July 20, and the An-o-chords on Sept. 14,” said Dave Binder, president of the non-profit organization.

The featured band on July 20 at 2 p.m., and performing for the first time on Whidbey Island, is the I Corps Band, the Army’s premier band for the Western United States and the Pacific Theater. “As a full-size band of 40 musicians, it is perfect for our Pavilion Stage,” said Binder, noting that the band’s repertoire goes far beyond Sousa and other patriotic music.

The price of admission? None. “This concert is free, so enjoy,” Binder said.
