Reserve rally draws county

The community rally is taking place today, July 23, to gather support to improve protections for Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve. The rally begins at 6 p.m. at the Crockett Barn, located on Crockett Farm Road off Fort Casey Road.

The Island County Commissioners have called a special meeting so they can attend, even though the county may come under fire.

Paula Spina, rally organizer and owner of Crockett Farm, said some residents in the area are upset with county administration for neglecting to protect Ebey’s Reserve.

She said the public outcry was sparked by Ian Jefferd’s county-approved plans to build a large home on the Crockett Prairie.

Spina said the goal of the rally is to inform and motivate the public to stop the home from being built; gather public support to convince the county commissioners to pass better protections for the reserve; and, if that doesn’t work, start a campaign to elect new commissioners.

Free pig roast on Fidalgo Avenue

Add a free pig roast to your list of summer activities.

On Sunday, Aug. 10, Oak Harbor’s Fidalgo Avenue merchants will host the first Fidalgo Avenue Block Party & Free Pig Roast.

This family event will run from 1 to 7 p.m. The pig roast will be ready at 3 p.m. and will be available until 6 p.m. During this time Fidalgo Avenue between Dock Street and Hathaway Street will be closed and transformed into the venue for an old-fashioned block party. There will be live music, food, a beer garden, and plenty of family fun and games.

Local merchants have donated about 75 items for a raffle to raise money for the Red Cross and Help House. Tickets are available at Frasers restaurant for $5.

Scott Fraser said this marks the second anniversary of the opening of Frasers Gourmet Hideaway. He and other members of the Fidalgo Avenue Community Merchants Association came up with the idea of throwing the party as a way of saying thanks to the Oak Harbor community.
