More lane closures are scheduled for motorists traveling on Highway 20 through Oak Harbor.

Work crews are busy repaving parts of the highway in Oak Harbor and they need to close some lanes at night to complete the work. Closures start at 7 p.m. and continue until 8 a.m.

The closures began Monday night and will continue until Friday morning so workers can pave Highway 20 from Midway Boulevard to Goldie Road.

Dave Chesson, spokesman for the Washington State Department of Transportation, said the paving  schedule is dependent on dry weather, which has been difficult during the mild summer.

The Washington State Department of Transportation is spending $2.9 million to repave the highway through Whidbey Island’s largest city. In addition to the repaving, workers are also replacing more than 80 sidewalk ramps throughout the construction area. All but 14 sidewalk ramps have been replaced.

Once the area between Midway Boulevard and  Goldie Road is finished, Chesson said work will begin on the other side of town from Pioneer Way to beyond  Swantown Road. That portion of the project will begin next week will wrap up the following week. After that, workers will tackle the stretch of Highway 20 in the middle of town.

Chesson said the coming roadwork is located closer to homes than prior work and mailers have gone out to notify impacted residents.

The work on Highway 20 through Oak Harbor could continue until October, Chesson said.
