The tall crane that’s been hovering over the Coupeville ferry landing in recent weeks is part of a seismic retrofit project designed to bring the structure up to standards in the event of a large earthquake.
The pile-driving work has gone on between passages since for two weeks at the Coupeville terminal.
It will ultimately prompt the closure of the run for one weekend in November, according to Ian Sterling, spokesperson for Washington State Ferries.
There will be no ferry service between Coupeville and Port Townsend on Nov. 5-6, he said.
Service will resume during the regularly scheduled early morning passage of Monday, Nov. 7.
Washington State Ferries got input from the chambers of commerce of both Coupeville and Port Townsend to find the best weekend to shut down the run and came up with the one in early November, Sterling said.
“Any time you have to close a terminal, it’s big,” Sterling said.
