No threat found following base lockdown

An individual who allegedly made a bomb threat Monday afternoon was released.

An individual who allegedly made a bomb threat Monday afternoon that caused the Ault Field base to briefly enter lockdown status was released and deemed not to pose any danger to the base or the public, according to a Navy spokesperson.

Naval Air Station Whidbey Island entered lockdown shortly after 4 p.m. May 1 when “an elderly gentleman made comments to a sailor that were considered a credible threat,” base public information officer Mike Welding said.

The sailor disclosed the comments to base security. The individual, a retired veteran, was taken into custody and interrogated by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Welding said.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal technicians and military working dogs cleared the scene. Base officials determined the man’s comments were not intended as a threat, and he was released.

Lockdown status was lifted within an hour.

Welding said this incident is not related to a similar event that took place a little over two months ago. On Feb. 22, the base went into lockdown in response to reports of an active shooter threat on base. Security cleared all locations and found no threat on that occasion. Welding said the base concluded its investigation of that incident and “took appropriate measures regarding that situation.”

No one was hurt in either incident.
