Four months of road work on N. Oak Harbor Road is expected to wrap up this month following the installation of streetlights and landscaping next week.

The $1.54 million improvement project, which included a little more than half a mile of roadway, from Whidbey Avenue to Crosby Avenue, began March 15 and is expected to conclude July 15, said GG Excavation Foreman Brandon Gilden.

The Anacortes-based construction firm was contracted to put in new storm drains, waterlines, curbs and sidewalks, streetlights and landscaping, as well as repave the roadway.

The job was one of several road improvement projects outlined in Oak Harbor’s Six-Year Transportation Improvement Program. The state requires that all municipalities have and update a street plan on an annual basis.

According to the existing plan, several roads are slated for work in 2011. Along with the $8.35 million SE Pioneer Way Improvement project, which is hoped to transform and revitalize the downtown shopping district, projects on Whidbey Avenue, NE Seventh Avenue, and the end of Dock Street are planned.

The most expensive, at $8.30 million, will be the Whidbey Avenue reconstruction. New sidewalks, curbs and gutters, drainage, transit facilities and street works are all planned. The project is tentatively scheduled to begin Jan. 1, 2011.

The work to NE Seventh Avenue, expected to cost $2.80 million, is expected to begin June 1 and will include street reconstruction and improvements. Also slated for June 1, is the construction of a multimodal facility at the end of Dock Street. The $1.04 million building is one part of the city’s municipal pier project. Funding for the pier and other infrastructure has yet to be identified.

The six-year transportation improvement plan is expected to go before the City Council for approval on Aug. 4.
