An emergency vehicle from North Whidbey Fire and Rescue was involved in an accident north of Oak Harbor Friday morning.

Trooper Norm Larsen of the Washington State Patrol said the accident occurred when a Mazda pickup, driven by a 50-year-old Coupeville man, was northbound on Oak Harbor Road. Behind the pickup was the emergency vehicle.

The driver of the pickup slowed and started turning left into the Diamond Rentals business. At the same time, the firefighter in the emergency truck started passing the pickup on the left, the trooper explained.

The two vehicles collided and went off the road to the left, crashing through a fence at the rental business. Nobody was injured, Larsen said.

At the scene, Larsen said some of the details of the collision weren’t clear. He said the firefighter driving the emergency vehicle claimed that he was running with lights and sirens on, but the driver of the pickup said he didn’t see or hear anything.

Larsen said he wasn’t sure what emergency the fire vehicle was responding to. The only emergency call at the time of the collision was a report of a boat taking on water at Deception Pass.
