North Whidbey Relay team deals blow to cancer

As chairperson of this year’s American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life committee, I would like to thank residents of North Whidbey for their generosity and support. Eighty-three teams participated in this year’s event, raising over $185,250 for the American Cancer Society’s research, education, advocacy and service programs. The outstanding support received proves that the people of North Whidbey are truly committed to the fight against cancer. We will continue to collect money for 2008 until Aug. 31.

I want to applaud the cancer survivors that participated in the opening lap and the survivor recognition. They are the reason we continue the fight because each year more and more people are living wonderful and productive lives following a diagnosis of cancer. The Luminaria Ceremony was especially emotional as we lit over 1,500 candles honoring and representing our loved ones with cancer diagnoses.

A special thanks to the many Relay For Life volunteers, speakers and performers who worked to make this event a success. The Relay For Life 2008 Committee did a phenomenal job of putting the event together; beginning their efforts last September for our June 6 to 7 event.

We also appreciate the generosity of this year’s 37 corporate sponsors and one Friend of Relay. Relay For Life would not be possible without them defraying the costs of the event and providing the supporting infrastructure.

Again, thank you for supporting the American Cancer Society and remember, it’s not too early to become involved in Relay For Life for next year.

Sincerely and with thanks

Linda Kaser
