The North Whidbey Junior (13/14) baseball team is heading to the state tournament.
North Whidbey thumped South Skagit 10-2 Tuesday, June 28, at Fort Nugent Park, sweeping the best-of-three series to win the District 11 championship.
The state tournament begins July 16 in Vancouver.
North Whidbey, coached by Ivan Gonzales, scored four runs in the first inning Tuesday and then tallied in each of the next three to pull away.
While the offense was piling up runs, North Whidbey starting pitcher George Dailey stymied South Skagit.
Dailey pitched six and a third innings, struck out 11 and was backed by a strong defense.
Jeremiah Dailey started the four-run, first-inning uprising with a walk. George Dailey followed with a single, and Anthony Sisson walked. A fielder’s choice, an error off the bat of Keygan Kesgard and walks to Hunter Hogarth, Nate Hummel and Ashton Mendiola finished the rally.
George Dailey reached on an error and eventually scored on a passed ball in the second.
Mendiola singled and scored on an error in the third.
North Whidbey scored three times in the third behind a walk to David Sisson and singles by Anthony Sisson, Landon Cantrell, Kesgard and Hogarth.
Mendiola was hit by a pitch in the seventh and later scored on an error to wrap up the scoring.
Anthony Sisson finished with two hits to lead the offense.
