NWAC snares 2nd in Oregon meet

The North Whidbey Aquatic Club traveled to Gresham, Ore., and swam away with second place in the 13-team Big Wave Decathlon at Mount Hood College's Aquatic Center May 26 and 27.

The Aquajets scored 674 points, trailing only the 1,092 of the host Columbia River Swim Team of Vancouver.

Leading the way for NWAC were Kelly Huffer (girls 11-12 division) and Laura Rosen (girls 15-and-older).

Huffer won the decathlon and seven of 10 individual events and dropped nine seconds in the 200 fly (2:36.33).

Rosen won five individual events and tied for the decathlon title.

Other Aquajet top-eight decathlon finishers earning a Big Wave T-shirt included Bruce Vagt, Shamus Warden, Olivia Tungate, Carlos Bishai, Michael Johnson, Molly Vagt, Ciara Hu, Cole Weinstein and Price Hu.

Swimming 100 percent personal records were Sydney Dickinson, Bishai, Mariel Empinado, Maya Krantz, Jillian Pape, Erica Sugatan, Bruce Vagt, Molly Vagt and Andrew Vogt.

Gold times were recorded by Empinado, Samantha Hines, Pape, Michelle Robinson, Brett Vagt, Lauren Vagt, Nichole Vogt and Warden.

Maria Bishai, Carlos Bishai, Sophie Dickinson, Sydney Dickinson, Krantz, Sugatan, Christy Thompson, Molly Vagt, Ashley Vogt and Andrew Vogt posted Silver times.

NWAC Swimmer of the Meet honors went to Molly Vagt for 10-for-10 PRs, seventh place in the decathlon, aggressive racing and cutting nine seconds off in the 400 free (5:15) and 200 breaststroke (3:23.33).

NWAC next competes at home in the Second Annual Round Robin, June 22 to 24, where it will compete in a dual meet series culminating in a championship final with teams from Marysville, Anacortes, Bellingham and Snohomish.

The North Whidbey Aquatic Club is a competitive swimming program of the North Whidbey Park and Recreation District. It includes swimmers of all abilities and ages from 6 through college.

Tryouts occur Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at the city pool from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. New swimmers should be able to swim a length of the pool in freestyle and backstroke. The first two weeks are free.
