NWAC tangles in annual intrasquad meet

Navy trumped Gold in the ninth annual North Whidbey Aquatic Club intrasquad meet at John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool Saturday, Sept. 17.

The Navy Rubber Duckies ran up 2,369 points to defeat the Gold Water Buffaloes by 50 points.

In a seesaw battle, the Rubber Duckies eventually prevailed despite the best efforts of Water Buffalo and top scorer Emily Huffer, who won all six of her individual events in the girls open division and contributed to two winning relays. Huffer swam to four personal records, including a 41-second improvement in the 400 individual medley (4:40.55).

Other event winners were Jerrin Concepcion, Kelly Huffer, Jacob Jepsen, Josh Jepsen, Ashleigh Merrill, Kenneth Morrow, Maira Sulin, Cole Weinstein and Lawrence Zapanta.

Those achieving 100 percent individual and relay PRs included JD Cabigting, Nick Davis, Sydney Dickinson, Joe Gorman, Maya Krantz, Emily Schroeder and Toren Wood.

Swimmer of the Meet was 13-year-old Joe Gorman, who swam 100 percent individual and relay PRs, improved an average of 12 seconds per 50 meters, dropped 52 seconds in the 100 IM (1:32.94) and dropped 15 seconds in the 50 butterfly (42.96).

The North Whidbey Aquatic Club is a competitive swimming program of the North Whidbey Park and Recreation District. It includes swimmers of all abilities and ages from 6 through college.

Tryouts occur Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at the city pool from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. New swimmers should be able to swim a length of the pool in freestyle and backstroke. The first two weeks are free.
