O’Brien earns spot in Mat Classic

Lang goes to state meet as alternate

Five Wildcats made it to the Class 4A Region I wrestling tournament at Jackson High School last weekend, but just one is guaranteed a spot in this week’s state meet.

Senior Sean O’Brien finished second at 171 pounds before bowing out to an injury default in the championship match against Kurt Swartz of Auburn.

Oak Harbor coach Mike Crebbin didn’t want to give detail as to the severity of O’Brien’s injury, but said he will wrestle at this weekend’s Mat Classic in Tacoma.

“He has been cleared by a doctor to wrestle at state,” Crebbin said. “I think he’d have to have broken a leg before you could make him miss state.”

O’Brien opens the two-day state tournament at 12:20 p.m., Friday, Feb. 17 against Joe Temus of Rogers High School in Puyallup.

Prior to the regional championship match O’Brien defeated Nick Salsbury of Everett via a first-round pin (1:15), Ed Conner of Auburn via a third-round pin (5:20) and Jared Walsh of Kentlake in an 8-3 decision.

Three other Wildcat wrestlers placed on Saturday, but did not receive the necessary fifth place or higher finish to get them to state.

Senior Jeff Lang took sixth place at 145 pounds and will go to Tacoma as an alternate. He won three of his five matches over the weekend, but lost a close 7-4 decision to Joe Johnson of Auburn in the fifth/sixth place contest.

“Coming through the backdoor is exhausting,” Crebbin said. “It was his fourth hard fought match of the day and he just couldn’t give what he wanted because of the appendicitis he suffered at Christmas.”

Senior David Marriott (140) and junior Matt Johnston (189) both finished in eighth place by winning one of their four respective matches. Junior Miles Hartt (152), Oak Harbor’s only other competitor lost his first two matches and was unable to place.

As a team, Oak Harbor finished tied with Marysville-Pilchuck at 15th with 34 points. Lake Stevens won the 28-team meet with 161 points.
