In what was a fairly quiet spring as far as team success, several individual athletes from Oak Harbor High School gained all-league honors from the Western Conference North earlier this week.

Leading the way with first and second team selections was the Wildcat baseball team, which finished at seventh place in the WesCo North at 7-9 and 10-10 — the program’s most wins since 1994.

OHHS had one first team selection and three second team.

Shortstop Marshall Lobbestael was named first team all-league infielder and was the only sophomore of 30 first and second team players. He hit for a team-best .353, but OHHS head coach Jim Waller feels Lobbestael’s recognition extended beyond his hot bat.

“Generally when someone makes all-conference, he is chosen because teams remember how well that player hit against them,” Waller said. “However, Marshall had an excellent year defensively at shortstop and had several outstanding games as a pitcher. I think his all-around play stuck out to the voters, not just his offense.”

Seniors Bryce Waller and Jake Jansen, who split time at first base and as designated hitter, were named to the second team after outstanding offensive seasons.

Waller, who was named second team utility, hit .317, had 14 RBI, 12 runs and hit nine doubles — the most doubles since Tim DeWispelaere (11) in 1994. Jansen was named second team infield after batting .303 with a team-high 17 RBI and two home runs. He also only had five strikeouts for the season.

“When it came to all-conference voting, they competed against each other and took votes away from each other,” coach Waller said. “I believe if one had played all the games at first base he would have made (first team) all-conference.”

Senior Trace Mead also earned second team honors in the infield after displaying a strong defense at second base and clutch hitting with a .338 average.

“He played well against all the teams and always seemed to be in the middle of our rallies,” Waller said.

The Oak Harbor boys soccer team, which finished in a tie with Arlington for last place in league at 1-13-2, still earned a significant amount of respect from around the league.

Senior midfielder Bryan Fakkema led the Wildcats in goals and was honored as a WesCo North first team all-league member.

The Wildcats also had four honorable mentions, including junior forward Fez Costa, junior defender Cory Fakkema, junior defender David Marriott and junior goalkeeper Brian Wandell.

Other OHHS athletes receiving all-league honors were: Mietra Smollack (first-team track and field), Kara Merriman (first-team tennis), Matt Holmly (first-team boys golf) and Libbe Bear (honorable mention fastpitch softball).

Girls golf was not reported.
