A bouncer at the Element Nightclub in downtown Oak Harbor is accused of assaulting a sailor severely enough that the blows fractured the man’s eye socket in seven places, court documents state.

Prosecutors charged Bo Thomas Shuck in Island County Superior Court Sept. 23 with second-degree assault. If convicted, he could face from three to nine months in jail under the standard sentencing range.

Oak Harbor Police Officer Tony Slowik investigated the assault which occurred in the parking lot outside the nightclub on July 23, though it wasn’t reported until July 27.

A witness reported that Shuck, who wasn’t working at the time, punched the 30-year-old sailor several times, then got on top of the man after he fell and continued punching him in the face, Slowik wrote. A bartender finally pulled Shuck off the man.

A witness said Shuck told her he assaulted the unsuspecting sailor because he gave him “a funny look,” the report states.

The victim told the officer that he doesn’t remember the assault very well, but woke up the next morning with his eye swollen shut and throbbing in pain.

His superiors at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station sent him to the Navy hospital, where X-rays showed about seven fractures in his left eye socket, the officer wrote.

The Navy sent the man to Madigan Army Hospital, where surgeons repaired the “blowout fracture” by placing two plates over the bones, the report indicates. The man, who is a crew member on military airplanes, had to undergo pressure tests to reestablish his flight status.

In an interview with the police, Shuck said he couldn’t remember the assault, but friends told him three different accounts of what occurred, the officer wrote.
