The Oak Harbor High School boys track team captured first and the girls second in the Wesco 3A North Division at the conference championship meet Wednesday and Friday, May 8 and 10, at Shoreline Stadium.

All of the Western Conference 3A teams, five from each division, competed at Shoreline.

Mountlake Terrace from the South won the boys meet with 131.5 points. While Oak Harbor placed fourth with 91, it was awarded the North title by finishing highest among the North’s five schools.

Oak Harbor boys coach Jay Turner said, “This was a complete surprise to us as we didn’t think we would have a chance. We had some really strong performances from John Rodeheffer and Clay Richardson in the distance races, all of the throwers, and also the two high jumpers, Jacob Olson and Chris Hailer.”

The South’s Glacier Peak took the overall girls title with 186.5, followed by the North’s Marysville-Pilchuck at 130.5. Oak Harbor was sixth with 69.5 but second among the North schools after M-P.

Girls coach Eric Peterson said, “Overall we’re really proud of how our kids performed. As we enter the post season we have a high number of girls moving onto the district meet, which is really a testament of their hard work this season.

He added, “Positive surprises on the girls side were the 4×200 and 4×400 relays. Both teams set PRs. Other notables from the meet were Jessica Hollins in the 100 and 200, a great performance for a sophomore; junior Alex Laiblin finishing fourth in the 3,200 with a huge PR; freshman Taylor Deconzo finishing fourth in the shot put; and senior Ciera Wiser in the javelin finishing second.”

Sophomore Rodeheffer ran to Oak Harbor’s only win Friday, taking the 3,200 (9:38.71).

He also placed second in the 1,600 (4:28.61) while Richardson was second in the 800 (2:00.18) and third in the 1,600 (4:30.32).

Hailer (high jump, 6-04) and Jeremy Foster (shot put, 49-11) earned firsts in Wednesday’s portion of the meet.

The Wildcats received fourths from Olson (high jump, 5-10) and Dayne Herron (shot, 47-03.5), and fifths from Tyler Adamson (discus, 132-04) and Carlos Beltran (javelin, 149-05).

Michael Laningham was sixth in the shot (42-11.25), and the 4×400 relay team of Carlton Johnson, Josiah Welch, Noel Cheeseboro and Richardson also placed sixth (3:37.49).

Patrick Mayer finished eighth in the 300 hurdles (46.60).

For the girls, Hollins finished third in the 200 (26.37) and fourth in the 100 (12.73), then joined Sierra Seabolt, Matti Miesle and Deja Bunch to claim second in the 4×200 (1:47.94).

Wiser placed second in the javelin (106) and eighth in the high jump (4-08).

Laiblin was fourth in the 3,200 (11:22.66) and fifth in the 1,600 (5:17.43), one spot behind Christina Wicker (5:13.64), who also earned fifth in the 400 (1:01.27) and eighth in the 800 (2:35.69).

Nalani Gabbert, Jember Jansen, Susanne Kaltenbach and Jackie Dejesus placed sixth in the 4×400.

Taylor Deconzo was fourth in the shot (32-05.5) and fifth in the javelin (99-01).

The district meet is Wednesday, May 15, and Friday, May 17, at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.
