Oak Harbor cheerleader heads to nationals

Oak Harbor Wildcats junior Kim Boon was named one of 35 finalists for the 2002 National Cheerleader of the Year Scholarship Competition recently.

Boon was one of 35 high school juniors named by the National Selection Committee, a groupe of college coaches and cheerleading experts. Preliminary scores were derived from an application process which included an essay, letters of endorsement, official transcripts, and a video.

The Oak Harbor resident will travel to Fayetteville, North Carolina May 16-19 to compete for scholarship awards and attend the 2002 National Leadership Conference for Cheerleaders. At the conference she will be able to interact with top college coaches who will be recruiting cheerleaders for their programs.

Boon helped the Oak Harbor Wildcats cheer squad place fifth at the USA Nationals held recently in Anaheim,California.

Boon is the daughter of Joan and Les Boon and is coached by Pam Headridge.
