Although the high school will be surrounded by several fire, police and EMS personnel tonight, there is no need to call 911.

The Oak Harbor Fire Department, Oak Harbor Police Department and Whidbey General Hospital Emergency Medical Services will be conducting a “full scale exercise” at Oak Harbor High School.

“We went door to door to try to notify everyone, but we couldn’t cover everyone,” Lt. John Dyer said.

The department brought in additional dispatchers for concerned neighbors who catch a glimpse of “wounded” students, covered in fake blood.

The realistic scenario will train personnel to build a unified command center and to work individually in large-scale emergencies.

Members of the high school Key Club will be given scripts and crews will stage a hostage situation.

Dyer said the exercise will begin at 7 p.m. and end around 9 p.m. The

will be partial street closures and detours to “through” traffic throughout the event. The areas that will be affected will be on 2nd Avenue NW in front of Oak Harbor High School and the north end of Jib Street.

If you are a resident in any area affected by the partial closure or detour, the police department asks that you inform personnel at that closure that you need to get into that area and they will allow you to pass through the barricade.
