With his bright pink hair, it’s obvious that Oak Harbor High School teacher Marc deLeuze lost a bet.
At least it was for a good cause.
Although not affiliated with the Heath Careers Club at the high school, deLeuze, a self-proclaimed “across the hall tormentor,” said he enjoys peeking into their meetings to chat. He teaches Computer Aided Drafting in the classroom across the hall.
“The club promotes healthy lifestyles for students and the community,” said club co-advisor and high school teacher Trevor Reed. They do projects and poster presentations around the school to highlight healthy lifestyle choices and they participate in monthly themes, such as October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Reed said.
Once when deLeuze peeked into a club meeting, the students asked him if he’d color his hair pink if the club could raise enough money for Susan G. Komen For the Cure, a foundation dedicated to finding a cure for breast cancer. DeLeuze said he would if the club could raise enough money.
Last year, the club raised some money but they exceeded that amount this year, Reed said.
During October, the club raised $300, meaning deLeuze had to live up to his word.
“I’m doing it to support the cause,” deLeuze said.
He bantered with club members as they threatened to color his mustache, too. He wrapped himself in a sheet and students prepared to change him from a brunette to bright pink.
“What would you do if the dye makes me go into anaphylactic shock?” deLeuze joked as the students planning to go into health career fields explained how they’d help him.
After much laughter, the dyeing was done and students joked about his new ‘do.
As to whether or not deLeuze will do it again, he said, “I might be talked into doing it again next year. It might be for a different dollar amount, though.”
