No margin of error remains for the Oak Harbor High School girls basketball team if it wants to reach the postseason.
After losing 41-31 at Marysville Getchell Wednesday, Feb. 3, the Wildcats need to win their final two games and receive a little help to advance past the regular season.
The top four teams in the Wesco North qualify for the playoffs, and Oak Harbor (1-7, 5-13) remains in fifth, two games behind fourth-place Everett (3-5, 6-13) with two games to go.
First, on Friday, Feb. 5, Oak Harbor needs to defeat Marysville-Pilchuck (1-7, 3-15) at home (7:15 p.m.) and Everett needs to lose to first-place Arlington.
Next, the Wildcats need to stop the Seagulls in the regular-season finale in Everett at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9.
An Oak Harbor win would lift the Wildcats into a tie with Everett, necessitating a tiebreaker to see which club will advance to face the fourth-place team from the Wesco South in a game to determine the final Wesco seed into the district tournament.
Oak Harbor is familiar with this scenario. It finished in a fourth-place tie last year with Marysville Getchell and lost the tiebreaker.
The Wildcats couldn’t overcome a sluggish offensive performance in Wednesday’s loss to Getchell.
Oak Harbor scored in single digits in each of the first three quarters and trailed 11-6, 24-14 and 30-21.
“We played well, we just couldn’t score,” coach Jon Atkins said. “The offense was working, but we missed a lot of layups and put-backs that could have been a real difference.”
Bryn Langrock topped the Wildcats with nine points, one more than Janae Payne. Deja Bunch scored six points, Julie Jansen four, AnnaBelle Whitefoot two and Rashanna Graham two.
Mikail Montez tallied 14 for the Chargers (5-3, 11-7).
