A 49-year-old Oak Harbor man is accused of raping his friend’s son repeatedly, molesting a teenaged girl, asking children for sex and providing a child with marijuana, court documents allege.
Roderick Woods was charged in Island County Superior Court March 6 with two counts of rape of a child in the first degree, child molestation in the second degree, two counts of communicating with a minor for immoral purposes and distribution of marijuana to a minor.
Detective Laura Price with the Island County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case that involved four children.
She interviewed a 12-year-old boy whom Woods had allegedly raped repeatedly, beginning when the boy was about 10 years of age.
The boy said Woods, a friend of the family, drove him to Walmart about two years ago. But Woods walked the child across the street to a “burnt house,” which was apparently an abandoned building. Woods allegedly raped the boy inside the house and threatened to get the boy in trouble with his dad if he refused, according to Price’s report.
In addition, the boy claimed Woods had forced him to perform a sex act on four other occasions. In one incident, Woods allegedly drove the boy to a movie but stopped in a woods to rape him, Price’s report states.
In addition, Woods is accused of sexually fondling one of four children who visited his home last summer. He allegedly molested a teenaged girl when after she fell asleep on the couch, the detective wrote.
Woods allegedly blew pot smoke into the children’s faces and repeatedly asked them to have sex with him, but they all refused. He also smoked pot with the 12-year-old boy and gave him “an ounce of bud,” Price wrote.
If convicted of the charges, Woods would face an indeterminate sentence of up to life in prison, with a minimum range sentence of 20 to 26.5 years in prison.
An indeterminate sentence means a defendant must serve the minimum sentence, which is set by the court, and then a special review board will decide whether to release him from prison.
