An Oak Harbor man is facing charges for allegedly trying to attack a police officer with a knife, according to court records.

Ronald G. Baker, 45, pleaded not guilty in Island County Superior Court July 29 to second-degree assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of possession of methamphetamine, possession of oxycodone and resisting arrest.

Oak Harbor police officer Mike Clements reported he responded to a weapons complaint at a Southeast Barrington Drive residence on the night of July 13 and found Baker and a woman standing in the doorway.

Clements said he knew Baker was wanted on several warrants, so he told him to put down the fanny pack he was carrying. Baker put the pack down slowly and suddenly bolted, Clements wrote.

Clements caught up to Baker, pushing him against a parked car. Baker abruptly turned to face Clements, who grabbed his wrist, causing something to fall to the ground. Clements said in his report he later realized it was a pocket knife with its blade opened and locked. Baker ran again and Clements was able to quickly stop him. Baker continued to resist until other officers arrived, the report said.

Baker told him that he always carries a knife and that it must have fallen out of his pocket, even thought the blade was locked open. Baker said he wasn’t trying to stab the officer.

Officers searched Baker and allegedly founds drugs. He faces up to seven years in prison.
