A 26-year-old Oak Harbor man is accused of threatening to kill his wife while he had a knife in his hand, court documents show.

Prosecutors charged Toby Townsend in Island County Superior Court June 27 with harassment — threats to kill. Judge Vickie Churchill set his bail at $10,000 June 25.

Townsend pleaded not guilty July 16.

According to the report by Lt. Mike Hawley with the Island County Sheriff’s Office, a North Whidbey woman reported June 24 that Townsend came to her room while she was sleeping and threatened to “beat her up so bad no one will recognize you,” then left.

That night, he returned to her bedroom, carrying a knife, and said “I’m going to kill you with this knife,” Hawley wrote.

Townsend denied making the threats and said he went to see the woman to talk.

Hawley wrote that Townsend had recently been discharged from the Navy for a DUI.

If convicted of the felony charge, Townsend could face between one and three months in jail under the standard sentencing range.
