An Oak Harbor man who raped an unconscious woman earlier this year was sentenced to prison.

Mark E. Shawley, 44, pleaded guilty in Island County Superior Court Aug. 30 to second-degree rape.

Wednesday, Judge Alan Hancock handed him an indeterminate sentence of seven years to life in prison. Shawley will have to serve the minimum of seven years in prison, and then a special review board will decide if he should be released.

The 22-year-old victim reported to police that she woke on April 2 to find Shawley raping her, court documents state.

She had been drinking the prior night and fell sleep feeling like she was going to throw up.

The victim said that Shawley had been inappropriately touching and sexually harassing her for years.

The victim’s mother and others claimed that Shawley had been obsessed with her since she was a child, according to a pre-sentence report by the Department of Corrections.

Shawley, who doesn’t have a criminal record, admitted to committing the crime immediately.

“He has admitted that he did and is sorry for what he did and knows it is a crime,” defense attorney Jennifer Bouwens wrote in response to the report.
