Oak Harbor Mayor Scott Dudley is out of surgery and doing well after doctors removed one of his kidneys to donate to a stranger.

Dudley’s wife, Christine, reported from Vancouver, B.C. just after noon on Monday that the three-and-a-half hour surgery was a success.

Christine said TV cameras and reporters met them at the Vancouver hospital early this morning. Dudley’s selfless act of donating a kidney to a 37-year-old stranger is big news in Canada. Dudley made the promise to donate his kidney last year after hearing Keesha Rosario speak at a Rotary Club meeting in Canada. She announced that her husband, Philip, was suffering from polycystic kidney disease and would die without a kidney transplant.

Dudley’s family has a history of the cruel genetic disease. He said he felt grateful that he wasn’t afflicted and had long planned to donate a kidney to someone in need.

Dudley kept his promise this morning. Dudley said before the operation that he should be back home this week, but it will take a few weeks to recuperate.
