Oak Harbor Police are investigating four vehicle prowls reported Sunday evening in two different areas of the city.
The first set occurred on Oxford Place, near Oak Harbor High School.
Police Chief Ed Green said one of the vehicles was unlocked outside a residence and personal identification including a social security card was taken.
The other report was of a vehicle the owner said was locked, however Green said they couldn’t confirm that and there were no signs of forced entry.
In that incident a camera was stolen.
Across the city, also on Sunday evening, two vehicle prowls were reported on Berwick Street.
Green said police are still gathering information on those incidents.
While it is unknown if all of the incidents are related, Green said the two on Oxford Place were right next to each other and he’d be hard pressed to say they’re not and it was probably someone going around checking doors.
There are several things residents can do to protect themselves from vehicle prowls.
First and foremost — lock your doors, he said. Also don’t leave valuable in your car.
“Use your car for transportation, not for storage,” Green said.
Motion lights can also be effective in that if someone is creeping in someone’s driveway it can alert homeowners and detract prowlers.
Green also advises that residents alert police immediately to suspicious activity.
“If you see someone in your neighborhood that doesn’t belong, call us,” he said. “We’re always looking around.”
