Two Oak Harbor teenagers are facing charges after a crime spree involving vehicles thefts, burglaries, a car chase that ended in a crash and an allegation of a gun at the high school.

Police found the two 15-year-old boys inside a stolen SUV on the morning of Jan. 28 and arrested them on suspicion of residential burglary, vehicle theft and vehicle prowling.

Oak Harbor Police Chief Ed Green said it’s concerning that kids were allegedly involved in such serious cases.

In one case, a juvenile allegedly burglarized a home — stealing pills and rifling through drawers — while the resident was asleep on a couch, he said.

“It caught us by surprise,” he said. “Not so much the crimes, but who was involved.”

One of the boys is facing charges in connection with all of the allegations while the other is connected with some of them, according to court papers.

The police reports indicate that other juveniles were also involved.

The Island County Prosecutor’s Office expected to file charges this week.

The crime spree began on Jan. 16 when someone broke into a camper trailer on Clipper Drive. The resident had video of the suspects.

On Jan. 22, a West Whidbey Avenue resident reported that her Ford Aspire was stolen from her garage and items taken from inside her house.

That night, a trooper with the Washington State Patrol spotted the stolen car on the highway and got into a high-speed pursuit that ended when the Ford Aspire crashed. No one was injured.

The suspect driving the car claimed he was borrowing it from a friend.

On Jan. 28, an Atalanta Way resident reported that someone stole his Ford Explorer, which he had parked on the street.

A West Whidbey Avenue resident also reported that someone had stolen her pills and pulled out all of the drawers in her kitchen.

Later that morning, the dean of students at the Oak Harbor High School reported that a student’s mother advised her that her son may have a gun at school and that a student had seen the gun on him the day before.

The dean said she heard that the boy, who was a runaway, may be at a home on Colonial Way.

A deputy went to the home and arrested the boy, who gave a false name and tried to flee on foot. The other teenager was sitting in the passenger seat of the stolen Ford Explorer, which was parked outside the house, according to the police report.

Green said that police didn’t find a gun and that there’s no evidence that the boy brought a gun to school beyond the witness’s claim.
